I Like to Grow Things

I’m a gardener, and I love to share photos of my beautiful flowers that I grow.

In addition to the beautiful blooms that I plant to attract birds each year, I often plant nutritious vegetables to make attractive plates at my table. Last year, I had a monster cherry tomato plant that was huge, it’s fruit abundant, gracing not only my table, but the tables of neighbors and friends because there was plenty to go around for all. I had to look up to it standing on the porch. It was crazy.

An enormous cherry tomato plant in a pot on a porch

It’s not surprising that my garden activities have found a way into my poetry. The follolwing scenario occured only in my head, but it was fun to write. I promise no animals were harmed in the making of this poem.

A Mole in the Garden

There’s a hole in my garden where a plant should be

I think a mole feasts on my zucchini

A carrot just vanished and there goes a pea!

By all that is sacred, I must get that mole

Or I fear that my garden will be nothing but holes,

Leaving only the rocks, which he hasn’t stole.

I’ll take a shovel and smash his head.

One whack and surely, the mole will be dead.

Oh dear! I’ve smashed my best pumpkin instead.

My cabbage are gone leaving several large holes

A tomato plant is sucked straight down by that mole

Leaving a hole that looks like a very large bowl.

Perhaps there is another way

I’ll fill that hole with smoke today

Then that mole won’t want to stay.

I can’t see my garden as smoke fills the sky

It burns my eyes and makes me cry

It clears to a big empty patch in my rye!

There will be nothing left, that mole’s such a hog.

To save my garden, I’ll turn loose the dog

And flood it all out; turn it into a bog.

The dog tears through the garden, pouncing on each hole

He tromps on my plants and knocks down a bean pole.

A muddy mess is created, but alas! No mole.

I watch as another tomato plant disappears

There goes a potato and a head of lettuce. Oh dear!

I’d better plant enough for me AND the mole next year.

Haigas

“A Haiga is either a Haiku or a Senryu poem accompanied by an image…” (Word Craft: Prose & Poetry, by Colleen M. Chesebro, p. 57) Since Haiku and Senryu are not usually titled, it goes to follow that Haigas are also untitled.

Now, I’d like to share a poetry reading of a Haiga poem from the Small Wonders collection. Please take a moment to give it a listen. (If you like it, you can also subscribe to the YouTube channel while there.)

Poetry Reading – A Haiga Poem

I’m a Bird Watcher

Those of you who follow my blog, Writing to be Read, and in particular the “Tales from the Bird Sanctuary” blog series, know that I am a bird watcher. I am fascinated by the feathered friends, more and more each year, which visit my mountain yard, and I share my fascination through photos in the blog series. In Small Wonders, I also share it through my poetry, as my bird friends have been a great inspiration.

Roger Raven

Roger Raven was camera shy

Whenever he saw the small black box,

He’d take to the sky

His big black wings would beat the air

Ruffling up the camera lady’s hair

Then Heather Hummingbird came around

The lady pointed the box and Heather acted the clown

She swoop and flutter and hover about

Roger Raven gave her a shout

“Hey! Get out of there!” he said,

“That camera lady wants your head”

“Silly bird. She’ll make me a star.”

The picture appeared right before Roger’s eyes.

“When she prints my photo, I will go far.”

Roger Raven watched in awe.

“She’s captured you!” he said with a caw.

“Bird Watching” – an acrostic poem

An acrostic poem is one in which the first letter of each line spells out a word, usually the title of the poem. I’d like to share in a poetry reading, my acrostic poem, “Bird Watching”, from the Small Wonders collection. Please take a moment to give a listen. Treasuring Poetry – Meet poet and author, D.L. Finn and a book review #TreasuringPoetry #bookreview #poetry

A lake with a hill behind it Text: Treasuring Poetry 2023 Hosted by Writing to be Read and Robbie Cheadle

My June Treasuring Poetry guest is the talented poet and author, D.L. Finn. Welcome Denise.

Why do you write poetry?

I write poetry for many reasons but the most important one is that I can describe what I’m seeing or feeling in ways I am unable to when I speak. Poetry also expresses or records the world as I see it or want it to be. I can use poetry to convey the pure awe of nature, share my thoughts, or vent frustrations. Writing poetry is not only a wonderful vehicle to communicate my emotions but I like that my perspective can be interpreted differently by the readers.

Do you think poetry is still a relevant form of expressing ideas in our modern world? If yes, why?

I do think poetry is still relevant. It is a beautiful art form that allows us to glimpse the world in new ways like any good painting would but through words.

Which poem by any other poet that you’ve read, do you relate to the most and why?

The first poem that captured me was A Road Less Traveled. I have the poem framed on my wall so I can enjoy it every day and appreciate that it can have a more layered meaning, and interpretations.

The Road Not Taken

BY ROBERT FROST

https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44272/the-road-not-taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Which of your own poems is your favourite and why?

I have two from when I first started writing poetry.  So, these poems have a special place in my heart.

The Bearded Old Man

The bearded old man

Walks across the quiet desert,

His hooded white robe

Protecting and sheltering him

From the burning sky.

His feet are silent against the sand.

He walks day and night,

Going to a place that he knows exists.

He beckons strangers to join him

As he keeps walking toward…

That place he calls home.

Fingers of the Sea

The weightless world of the beach engulfs me

As the long, extended fingers of the sea

Gently

Stroke me—welcome me,

Enticing with its salty breath,

Satisfying my deep, hidden hunger.

Slowly

The fingers curl back

An invitation,

Beckoning toward the heart of the sea.

Beneath my gaze on the cold, wet world

Its subjects are sent out to tempt,

Screeching and scurrying

Above and below me,

All in a frenzied orchestrated rhythm.

The sea’s haunting song

Urgently

Seduces my soul.

All of my resistance floats away

Like the curling waves,

As I blissfully clutch

The fingers of the sea.

Is writing poetry easy for you compared to prose or do you do a lot of editing and revision of your poems?

Poetry does seem to come easily to me. I will usually write the poem by hand and then later put it on the computer. Editing comes later when I use the poem for my blog, a challenge, or a book. Each poem is different but when it feels and sounds right to me—it’s done. It is a different process for free verse over symbolic. In free verse I let the words flow naturally, while in symbolic poetry I need to make my words fit a pattern. I do enjoy writing both types of poetry and challenge myself to pen poetry in many different places. This includes the back of a Harley, underwater, or on a crowded plane. In writing prose, I need a quiet space and an idea to get me writing so it’s very different process from poetry.

What mode (blog, books, YouTube, podcasts) do you find the most effective for sharing your poems with poetry lovers and readers?

I share my poetry on my blogs, newsletters, and challenges. I also have a book, Just Her Poetry, and working on another one right now. I least like to read my poetry but will still do it.

My review of Just Her Poetry Seasons of a Soul (Poetry)

Picture caption: Cover of Just Her Poetry Seasons of a Soul by D.L. Finn. Features a wooded area with snow on the ground.

This book, packed with exquisite poems, is divided into two main sections, namely, Just her poetry about nature and the author’s experiences investigating sites of natural beauty from her seat behind the driver of a Harley and Seasons of a soul which includes a variety of passionate and evocative poems about the author’s emotional state during various experiences and circumstances she has faced during her life.

I was attracted particularly to the second section of poems and was captivated by the author’s depictions and descriptions of the states and stages of life. I selection of my favourite lines are as follows:

“I am alone
Yet the voices from my past sit with me.
They can haunt me – or comfort me.”
From Now

“It’s time to let go of the things I’ve collected.
Leaving room for my heart to shine through my smile.
Then my peace will be complete within my soul.”
From Simply Gone

And this extract from my favourite poem:
“I’m figuring out why I keep repeating the same issue over and over,
Like walking by a shoe in the middle of the room, tripping over it daily,
But not moving it or even taking another route so I don’t fall over that shoe.
Then it became guilt for me, always been there, while I kept tripping on it.”
From The Shoe.

This particular poem really spoke to me and I could relate to it completely. That, for me an avid reader of poetry, is a rare and wonderful thing.

My review of In the Tree’s Shadow (short story collection)

Picture caption: Cover of In the Tree’s Shadow by D.L. Finn. Depicts a wood area with a misty background.

In the tree’s shadow is an entertaining collection of horror, paranormal and sci-fi short stories that is well worth reading. The stories all revolve around themes of self worth, love and relationships and use dark twists and turns to demonstrate the strength of love and its ability to overcome impossible seeming odds. The stories are of different lengths with some being quite long and detailed and others being 99-word flash fiction.

My favourite story was the first in the book called ‘End of the road’. The main character’s dismal life was well described and the reach of her grandmother’s love from beyond the grave was welcome and heart warming.

‘The Playdate’ and ‘A Man on the pier’ were both unexpectedly dark with most interesting twists that gave me quite a shock.

Another tale that I found particularly pleasing was ‘The Dolphin’. It was not dark, rather heart warming and unique.

All the stories are well written and the characters are nicely drawn.

My moment of fame

The phone rang.

“Hello.”

A male voice with a very strong English accent came through the line, asking for me.

“This is she,” I replied.

The voice at the other end identified himself as Mitch Barrett, an artist who I had gone to great lengths locating his contact information and emailed, asking permission to use the image of one of his paintings in my poetry display. Of course, it was. Who else could it be with an accent like that. And he was calling me. All the way from London!

I had contacted Mitch Barrett via email, about using one of his paintings, “Voices”, as a background for my poem of the same name in my poetry displays, which I was creating for participation in a small, local writers & artists’ fair, the first I had ever attended or participated in.

I had a booth, but no book, so I collected a few of my favorite poems and put backgrounds behind them, selling them for $5 a piece. I had written a poem called “Voices”, about all the different voices that make demands upon us, and when I found Mitch’s painting, by the same name, depicting the same concept… well, call it serendipity, if you like, but I knew it was more than just chance. This was the background for my poem and I knew it, but of course, I had to gain permission from the artist.

Of course, Mitch granted me permission to use his painting in my display, but that phone call was the beginning of a longer correspondence, one in which Mitch informed me of a pair of paintings he was working on, in which he wanted to incorporate poetry, and he asked me if I would write a poem for him to use with them.

From that conversation, I wrote “Intimacy & the Harlequin Dance”, which he used in one of the paintings, “Intimacy”. I don’t think the second painting was ever finished, but that first painting was placed on display at the Kaleidoscope Gallery at Battle Sea Park, in  London, in 2010, with my poem, until someone eventually bought it.

I didn’t make any money from that poem, but that didn’t make me any less proud to have it featured in Mitch’s painting. Thanks to him, I had a special accolade which not many poets had. My work was featured in a work of art, my second publication, so to speak. I had had one poem published at the time for which I had received $5. I was proud of that, too, but this… this was something really special.

And now, “Intimacy & the Harlequin Dance” is featured in Small Wonders, so that everyone can enjoy it.

Painting: "Intimacy" by Mitch Barret

Intimacy and the Harlequin Dance

We dance through the masquerade of life

Disguised to fit the music

Of so many different melodies

That at times, we forget which tune

Holds the heartstrings of who we really are.

Then one day, we find the perfect dance partner,

But to attain the perfect rhythm

We must open ourselves up and reveal our souls.

Intimacy requires that we relinquish the mask

To expose the genuine self that lies beneath.

After all the years of dancing to false tunes

Will we be able to keep time

To the genuine dance and the original rhyme?

Or shall we don the mask once more and continue to

Keep time to the false melody of the Harlequin dance?

“Aspen Tree”

I’d like to share with you one of the poems included in the Small Wonders collection. This is a minimalist poem, and the goal is to paint a picture in as few words as possible. It was first published in Colorado Life Magazine (2016). Hopefully, it describes for you my favorite tree. It is titled, “Aspen Tree”

Poetry Reading – “Aspen Tree”

That’s it for today’s stop on the WordCrafter Small Wonders Book Blog Tour. I hope that you’ve enjoyed this first stop on the tour enough to want to follow the tour and viosit each stop along the way. You can do that through the links in the schedule above, but remember that the links won’t work until each post goes live. Be sure to leave a comment so that I know you were there, and I’ll give you an entry in the giveaway. WIP Update: The Rock Star & The Outlaw

In June, I plan to finish up The Rock Star & The Outlaw and gear up for a Kickstarter campaign in July & August. I’ll be setting up the Kickstarter with some awesome reward teirs and creating content to fill those tiers, so you know I will be hard at work. If all goes as planned, I will be wrapping up the final edits and setting it up for a September release by the end of the month. I’m excited to able to share this western time-travel romance adventure novel with all of you, so be watching for it soon.

The Rock Star & The Outlaw on a digital device and in print

A time-traveler oversteps his boundaries in 1887. Things get out of hand quickly, and he is hanged, setting in motion a series of events from which there’s no turning back.

LeRoy McAllister is a reluctant outlaw running from a posse with nowhere to go except to the future.

Amaryllis Sanchez is a thrill-seeking rock star on the fast track, who killed her dealing boyfriend to save herself. Now, she’s running from the law and his drug stealing flunkies, and nowhere is safe.

LeRoy falls hard for the rock star, thinking he can save her by taking her back with him. But when they arrive in 1887, things turn crazy fast, and soon they’re running from both the outlaws and the posse, in peril once more.

They can’t go back to the future, so it looks like they’re stuck in the past. But either when, they must face forces that would either lock them up or see them dead.

Today’s Stop

On this tour stop we’ll hear poetry readings by two of the contributing authors to the anthology, Poetry Treasures 3: Passions, Judy Mastrangelo and Yvette Prior.

Meet Judy Mastrangelo

Judy Mastrangelo is a talented artist and poet, who has published several illustrated children’s books and two decks of Oracle cards. I first met her when I reviewed both her book, , and her Oracle cards, and I recently reviewed her Oracle cards, as well. Her illustrations are always bright and colorful. She does absolutely amazing nature and fantasy paintings. And in Poetry Treasures 3: Passions, she demonstrates her poetic talents, which are equally amazing.

Head shot: Judy Mastrangelo

Judy Mastrangelo has written and illustrated several books, which include themes of Poetry, Fairytales, and Fairies. She follows in the tradition of “The Art of the Golden Age of Illustration”. Some of her titles include: a series of four Fairy books: “Portal to the Land of Fae” which include Flower Fairies, Fairy Tale Fairies, Secrets of the Fairies, and Mystical Fairies. Additional books include “What Do Bunnies Do All Day?”, “Enchanted Fairy Tales”, which she illustrated and adapted, “The Star”, illustrating the poem Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, and her new fairy tale “The Magic Blanket”. Besides creating books, her artwork has been used in several Inspirational Oracle Card Decks, as well as some that she has also written herself. She licenses her artwork for many products, including Art Prints and Wall Murals. Judy has taught Creative Drama and Dance as well as Painting, to Children and Adults, and has directed her own Community Theater for all ages. As part of her work, she enjoys encouraging people to develop their own Imagination and Artistic Talents.

“Gaia’s Love”, by Judy Mastrangelo

Gaia’s Love

Gaia’s Love permeates throughout.

Her deep passion for every water droplet, leaf, flower,

butterfly, frog, and snail, can be seen and felt.

Breath deeply of the Air surrounding her.

She appears out of Purple Sunset, Sunrise Clouds.

She can be seen reflected in ripping waters,

rising from her earthly hills and mountains,

as graceful leaves, rainbows,

and flowers bedeck her.

Meet Yvette Prior

Yvette Prior is another poet whose work was new to me before being introduced on “Treasuring Poetry”, but I quickly saw what a talented poet she is. She took a different approach to the poetry reading than the others and got creative with it. Instead of reading a single poem, she’s reading samples of each of her poems featured in Poetry Treasures 3: Passions, and made a beautiful video to go with it.

Head Shot: Yvette Prior

Yvette Prior lives on the East Coast of the United States with her spouse, Chris, and together they have three adult children, two grandchildren, and no pets (after having many dogs over the years).

Yvette enjoys working with people and her varied work background includes education, social work, hospitality management, and lots of outreach. Her passion area is studying about health and wellness and after earning a Ph.D. in I-O Psychology, she poured into waiting book projects and she has not stopped writing since.

Her goal as a writer is to educate, edify, and encourage readers. Her personal blog can be found at priorhouse.wordpress.com

About Yvette & Her Poetry

My name is Yvette Prior and I am excited to be a part of the 2023 Treasuring Poetry series, which features the theme of passions for this third volume.

The four poems I submitted for this anthology were created during a very special time in my life – a time of setback in one area and then a time of joyous celebration with a marriage anniversary milestone. I think the energy – from persevering and celebrating – can be felt in each poem.

The first poem, “Dancing with Angst”, explores how setback (and life’s angst) can be embraced (danced with) to cultivate growth and humility. When we yield, it can lead to stability. “Angst is more than only woe. Even though – we are glad to see it go – it can magnify joy, changement to stir up appreciation; you cannot fully know, how dancing with angst helps growth, until you have been cut down, pounded out, unwound.”

The “Quiet Fuel of Passion” poem reminds us that humans are guided by values, which “are always screaming, beneath the scenes, often quiet, and unheard.” This poem is a call for self awareness about what you might be striving for and to make sure it is meaning laden.

The third poem, “We are a Bird, said He” unfolded after a February date night and then led to a fun part of an anniversary celebration; my husband and I celebrated our decades-long union by using metaphor and real-life examples from birds.

Lastly, the “Poetic Sleep” poem unfolded after a night of restlessness, where rhymes were churning in my mind. In the morning, all ideas were gone and this poem is meant to connect with other writers who have sometimes had the flood of ideas come – to then wake and see it all go.

I highly encourage you to get a copy of the Treasuring Poetry 3: Passions anthology, because the diverse and eloquently written poems offer enrichment and delight.

Today’s Stop

On today’s stop, we have video readings from Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer and Smitha Vishwanath. Rosemerry is sharing a reading of her poem, “Twenty Years Ago, Ten Years Ago, Last Week”, and Smitha is sharing a reading of her poem, ” “. Both of these lovely poems are featured in Poetry Treasures 3: Passions.

Meet Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer

Today’s stop features a peotry reading by contributing Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer, which is a real treat. Rosemerry is a performance poet, and I was privileged to attend one of her live performances back in 2010. She was spectacular. The way she draws you into the poem and makes you feel her words is amazing. Rosemerry is a wonderful, vibrant lady, who embraces the written word as if it were a lover, caressing and shaping it into what she needs it to be. I had the pleasure of featuring an interview with her, right here on Writing to be Read. That’s why I asked Robbie to invite her to be a guest on “Treasuring Poetry”, and why I am so pleased to have her work featured in this WordCrafter anthology. It is a privilege and an honor to work with her. I hope you will enjoy this reading as much as I have.

Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer co-hosts Emerging Form (a podcast on creative process), Secret Agents of Change (a surreptitious kindness cabal) and Soul Writer’s Circle. Her poetry has appeared on A Prairie Home CompanionPBS News Hour, O MagazineAmerican Life in Poetry, onCarnegie Hall stage, and on river rocks she leaves around town. Her collection Hush won the Halcyon Prize. Naked for Tea was a finalist for the Able Muse Book Award. Her most recent collection is All the Honey. Her daily audio series, The Poetic Path, can be found on the Ritual app, her daily poetry practice can be read on her blog, A Hundred Falling Veils, and her book of mindfulness poetry prompts is Exploring Poetry of Presence II. One-word mantra: Adjust.

Twenty Years Ago, Ten Years Ago, Last Week

If I could go back in time
and offer advice to my younger self,
I wouldn’t.
I would let her fail all over again.
I’d let her falter. I’d let her lose.
I’d let her stumble
and struggle and bomb.
But I would lean in close
and let her know
I am deeply in love with her.
It’s so easy now to give her this,
this self-compassion in full bloom,
this thing she believed
was impossible.

Meet Smitha Vishwanath

I first met Smitha Viswaneth through her interview with Robbie Cheadle on the “Treasuring Poetry” blog series, right here, on Writing to be Read, so I can’t say that I know her well, but I’ve been learning a lot about her. Smitha is an award winning poet of a National Poetry Month Challenge two years in a row, and she’s been nominated poet of the month several times on Spillword. She has poetry published in several online publications, and her debut novel, Coming Home, just came out last month.

Smitha Vinwnath sitting on a couch

Smitha Vishwanath is your quintessential ‘bored banker’ turned writer. After a rewarding career in Banking in the Middle East where she worked for leading banks in senior positions, she quit and moved to India in July 2018 with her husband who had been transferred to the country on an international assignment. Thereon she began her writing journey.

‘Roads’ is the first book she has co-authored. Having lived and studied in different countries and different states within India and worked with different cultures, Smitha understands that ‘change’ and ‘ups and downs’ are very much a part of life. It is this experience that reflects in her poems and her writing which are filled with positivity, acceptance and willingness to change for the better.

She also writes regularly through her blog: https://lifeateacher.wordpress.com

A child called, ‘Passion’

A child called, Passion,
I met him on my walk, one day
and asked him to come home.
He replied, ‘On one condition-
only if you give me your undivided attention.’

‘How difficult could that be? aloud, I wondered,
I raised a family with children- two!’
Smiling impishly, he said ‘Not much, if you surrendered.”
I laughed at his presumptuousness
Little knowing how true to his words he’d be.

The moment, Passion, walked in through my door
He obscured the rest of the world from sight
and kept me waking into the night
He pranced around all day-tireless, and unbound.
It made me loathe the day, him, I found.

Passion was a stubborn child
demanding complete allegiance.
His appetite was unappeased,
his thirst unquenched;
he made no allowance!

A ruthless master, a sorcerer
He turned me into a willing slave.
I fulfilled his every bidding;
the years went by, I couldn’t tell
and the children flew before I knew.

But, Passion, he stayed behind.
I grew old, and he grew kind.
Passion, that stubborn child
remained wilful until the end
and refused to leave,

even though my body was hard to mend.
He nourished my body and fed my soul
And made me feel as good as whole.
Passion, that stubborn child, simply would not let go;
no doctor could understand that child’s miraculous cure.

So, if you ever cross paths with a child called, ‘Passion.’
Hold onto him with a firm hand
Even if you must endure.
Lug around for a while if you must-
but don’t ever let go.

For when all the others leave-
He will be standing by your side
For, Passion, is a stubborn child
and loyal as can be
Let nobody tell you otherwise.

A raving five-star review of Poetry Treasures 3: Passions on Goodreads.

Raving Revue

“…It’s an eclectic collection and a fabulous way to discover new poets to read. Expect varying interpretations of poetic passions. Not all are amorous! Some are thoughtful, personal to the author, (the author’s interests, experiences and loves,) and many have deep insight into human trials and tribulations…”
