Writing Exercise: What Wasn’t Funny Exercise

All too often the American literary establishment, i.e… the literati, often holds humorous writing in low esteem, reasoning that if something is funny, it can’t be serious. This, of course, is absurd. Consider persons in dire circumstances (such as in the film and later TV series, MASH: Don’t they often tell jokes to ease tension or to make a situation more tolerable?)

Even such “serious” writers as John Steinbeck will create a humorous scene, such as a pregnant woman waddling down a dusty road. And some of our top historic writers, such as Mark Twain, are renowned for using humor with an underlying current of seriousness.

So, now that we’ve debunked this false notion about humor, it’s time to have fun.

The Exercise:

Think of something happening to you that didn’t seem funny at the time. For example, a bee or a fly might have flown into your auto when you were stuck in a traffic jam. Or perhaps a roommate (or your child) set your stove on fire, and firemen tore it from the wall and tossed it into the backyard. Draw the incident into the humor spotlight and transform it so it emphasizes things that will evoke your reader’s smile or laughter.

Remember how important pacing is to humor. Critical details become crucial, too. But the last thing you want to do is tell the reader you’re about to lay a funny story on her/him. Surprise the reader with the zaniness.

The Objective:

Because humor resides largely in what attitude you assume toward your material (i.e. the tone), you must be able to discover the comic, the exaggerated, and the unlikely. Remember, too, that you could just as likely take the fly/bee story and make it tragic: The bee stings the driver, smashes into another car, killing an infant in the back seat. Obviously, you’ll want to avoid such a “turn.”

Step Into the Undawnted Universe

Some authors write in one lane. DL Mullan builds worlds — and then dares you to walk into every single one of them.

Welcome to Undawnted, where imagination is fearless. Whether you’re craving a slow-burn paranormal romance, a bone-chilling horror story, a mind-bending sci-fi thriller, or songs/lyrical poetry that lingers long after the last line- there’s a feeling here waiting to pull you in.

Fall for the forbidden. In Nocturnal Redemption trilogy, mythology professor Ryan Blackburn has spent her life studying the legend of humanity’s protectors — never expecting to meet a pack of werewolves and a vampire on his nightly rounds. Her family’s myths weren’t myths at all. As she’s drawn into the vampire’s hidden world, one thing becomes clear:  no one is as they appear.

Fear what’s waiting in the woods. Kurst asks a simple, terrifying question: what could go wrong when you inherit a cabin in the woods? The answer involves a sasquatch, skinwalker, and medicine man — and readers have called it a masterclass in horror with “a good dark secret” at its heart. It’s part of the acclaimed Midnight Garden anthology, a dark fiction collection praised for delivering “the printed version of jump scares.”

Chase the multigenerational curse. Fans of atmospheric enigmas will want to dive into the Salt Pines Mystery series, where a family curse spans generations and secrets refuse to stay buried.

Go beyond the ordinary. In the sci-fi novelette The Reality Hackers, reality itself isn’t as constant as you think. And for readers who want an ongoing saga, DL Mullan’s multi-book Legacy Universe — a supernatural superhero series — is currently in the works, promising an expanding mythology for readers who like to get lost in a world for the long haul.

Need something lighter? The Town Santa Forgot brings warmth and holiday charm for readers who want romance with a side of magic, while DL Mullan’s poetry collections — including The Descent, Impetus, Effloresce, and Phantastic — offer a darker, Poe-and-Dickinson-inspired verse for poetry lovers who like their beauty a little haunted.

Why readers keep coming back: DL Mullan isn’t just a writer — she’s a classically trained musician, award-winning digital artist, and lifelong storyteller who designs her own book covers and builds entire creative universes around each release. That range shows: every story carries the fingerprints of someone who thinks in full sensory perception, not just plots.
