My Review of Blood Orchids
I purchased a digital copy of Blood Orchids, by Toby Neal, through a free Bookbub Deal. I’m offering an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own. I chose this book because I liked the title.
Lei has escaped her abusive past and is working on healing after being molested by her mother’s boyfriend. Being a cop helps because it offers opportunities to prevent others like her from being abused, or at least get justice for them. Each time a girl is assaulted or murdered, it brings up issues for Lei, and brings her closer to facing the memories she’s buried. Now, it seems her past has come back to haunt when she discovers she is being stalked, but she won’t let that stop her from hunting the vicious serial killer she’s after, even when it seems the two might be connected.
This crime thriller kept my interest through to the last page. I give Blood Orchids five quills.
About The Trail of the Gunfighter

He stands between two worlds — and both want him dead.
Nash is a hardened gunfighter with Apache blood in his veins and danger on every trail he rides. He knows the land, the people, and the cost of choosing sides — but some journeys leave no room for neutrality.
Hired to escort a desperate miner through hostile territory, Nash knows the risks before the first mile is ridden. Tensions are high. Old wounds run deep. And when they find a wagon slaughtered and left to rot in the dust, it’s clear this crossing will demand blood.
With enemies closing in, a loyal dog at his side, and a mysterious woman who may be ally or threat, Nash must rely on instinct, skill, and hard-earned experience to keep them alive.
Trail of the Gunfighter is a gritty, fast-paced western packed with danger, hard choices, and frontier justice — the first book in the Trail of the Gunfighter Western series, following a man who survives by walking the line others won’t.
Ideal for fans of classic western action, morally complex heroes, and long-running series built for binge reading.

My Review of The Trail of the Gunfighter
I received a free digital copy of The Trail of the Gunfighter, by Wyatt Steele in a Bookbub deal. I am providing an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
Everyone knows I love the western genre, both for reading and for writing, so when I found a western by an author I wasn’t familiar with in a free Bookbub deal, I just couldn’t resist. I was surprised to find this book marketed as a western classic for men, but then, I guess most of the western genre has been aimed at male readers. I enjoyed it anyway. It is truly a well written western in the classic style and form, and my love for the western genre stems from reading the works of Louis L’Amour.
The Trail of the Gunfighter is filled with dirty double-crosses, western tragedies, and a quest for frontier justice. I give it five quills.

Sometimes a life change…
Can toss you into deep water.
Nail salon owner, Lorelei Baker, is more than ready for a change after her divorce. So, when her cousin, Carolina Hart – heroine of the Hart Times Cozy Mysteries series – tells her about a job possibility, she jumps at the chance.
Becoming a kitchen manager on a river cruise boat wasn’t something she’d ever dreamed she’d do, but it couldn’t be much more dramatic than running a nail salon…could it?
Lorelei dives right into the position and gets along with everyone onboard, with one exception. There’s a busybody activities director, who thinks she runs the entire ship, and refuses to see it any other way.

My Review of Dead in the Water
I purchased a copy of Dead in the Water, by Emma Ainsley through a KindofBook deal. I’m offering an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
I chose this book when I was looking for a cozy mystery to lighten the mood after several dark fiction stories, as a sort of pallet cleanser. I was not disappointed. It is a short story, and it keeps the pages turning, only taking me two sittings to finish it.
Lorelie Baker is headed for a new start after her old life crumbled around her. She becomes a last-minute hire as kitchen manager on a riverboat cruise line, but steps into more than she bargained for. The activities director is downright hostile for no apparent reason, having little kitchen experience, she is unprepared for her position, and who’d have guessed she’d be plagued with sea sickness every time they are anchored. Before she can learn the ropes, the activities director goes overboard, and it feels as if she’s the main suspect. But there is something about the recent events that bothers her, and the other staff is acting strangely, and she just can’t help but search for answers to appease her curiosity.
A light, fun, who dun-it. I give Dead in the Water five quills.
About The Devil’s Playground
In the Devil’s Playground, a Sinner always plays to win.
Nicolette
Back in Springfield for the first time in years, I needed money, and I needed it fast.
When my job as a hostess at the local Italian place wasn’t going to earn me enough to cut it, I did the one thing I promised I would never do: I got involved with one of the syndicates that rule the seedy city.
Considering I’m trying to avoid anyone with ties to the Libellula Family, I head to the West Side, and hope like hell the Sinners Syndicate will give me a chance.
The Devil’s Playground isn’t my first choice, but what else can I do? I make it clear that I’m only interested in serving drinks… until some big shot gambler offers me ten grand for one night.
I take him up on it—only to have him wager his night with me to another guy… and lose.
Now I’m expected to honor my deal with the Syndicate’s underboss, and the charming bastard who hired me for this job in the first place… while also hiding any ties I have to his enemies.

Royce
From the moment Nicolette walked into the Playground, I wanted her—but then I brought her on as one of our girls, and she was suddenly off-limits.
I learned the hard way: work and pleasure don’t mix. If I’d met her anywhere else, I might’ve taken a shot at the waitress, but she needed the job more than she needed a boyfriend, so I backed off.
And, okay, that’s a damn lie. I didn’t pursue her, but hell if I didn’t take a page out of Devil’s book and start watching over Nic from the shadows…
I would have left it at that, though, until one of the Playground’s more well-known wallets set his eyes on my girl.
They don’t call me “Rolls” for nothing. I played him for the night she agreed to, telling myself that I was just saving her from what the sick and twisted customer wanted to do to her.
Then I get my first taste of Nicolette, and I realize that one night will never be enough… and I’ll stop anyone who tries to take her from me.
*The Devil’s Playground is the second book in the Deal with the Devil series, a collection of interconnected standalones set in the fictional crime hotspot of Springfield. It tells the story of “Rolls” Royce and the one woman he’ll do anything to save, Nicolette Williams.

My Review of The Devil’s Playground
I purchased a digital copy of The Devil’s Playground, by Carin Hart, through a KindofBookDeal. I’m offering an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own. I chose this book because of its stunning cover.
The Devil’s Playground is Book 2 in the Deal with the Devil series, but it works well as a stand-alone. There are trigger warnings for this book, and the first half of the book is filled with explicit, steamy sex scenes. Once the groundwork has been laid, the story moves forward with action and danger in the second half that keeps readers on the edge of their seats and pages turning.
Nicolette Williams is on the run from a possessive mafia enforcer who thought he owned her. When she comes out of hiding and returns home to care for her mother as she recovers from a freak car accident, she is forced to take a job with the Sinners’ Syndicate to make ends meet, and gets romantically involved with the Sinners’ sexy underboss, ‘Rolls’ Royce. She tries to tell herself she can remain under the radar of the man she needs to avoid and stay safe. After all, the Sinners protect their own, and no matter what she was before, she is now one of them as the love affair between she and Royce heats up and becomes serious.
A steamy, edge-of-your seat thriller with well-developed characters, and a well-crafted plot. I give The Devil’s Playground five quills.

Kristiana Liepa was supposed to use the money to save her family farm. She was not supposed to spend it all to save a massive, black stallion.
But when she saw how he was being treated, what’s a vet to do?
She had no idea that gorgeous beast was really a powerful (and morally gray) magician who had been cursed by a witch, or that she was the only one who could reverse the curse.
And she couldn’t possibly have known how that one rash decision would irrevocably change her life…and his.
Need a little more information to make up your mind? Read a longer description below:
Kristiana’s father has a gambling problem. After a particularly bad hand of cards puts their family’s land in jeopardy, her dad’s solution is to call her billionaire ex, but Kris can’t bring herself to beg him for money. At least, not her first time seeing him in 10 years. Instead, she withdraws her life savings and bets on herself.

Thankfully, it pays off! She and her most promising horse win big at the Down Royal steeplechase in Ireland, but only because the best horse on the track wasn’t ridden properly. Luckily, it’s just enough to grant a stay of execution with the bank.
It would have been, but when Kris realizes her nemesis is abusing the gorgeous black stallion who should have won, she can’t help herself. She spends her winnings buying the horse she fell for the moment she saw him. It may not be the smartest move in the short run, but Obsidian Devil’s her best hope of finally digging out from under the massive debt hanging over them. She’ll have to ask her ex to help with the next payment, but seeing him again won’t be sobad.
What Kris doesn’t know is that her new purchase is actually a powerful magician stuck in horse form by a witch’s curse. She also has no idea that she’ll be the only person who can help him lift the curse. And worst of all, that helping him may mean losing the family farm for good.

My Review of My Queendom for a Horse
I purchased My Queendom for a Horse, by Bridget E. Baker and narrated by Cindy Gunderson from a Chirp Freebie Friday deal. I’m offering an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
I chose this book because of the fantastic cover with shades of blues and purples. Although the tiny sparkles indicated a magical theme, the image of a horse made me think of the story of Black Beauty, a story I loved as a child. Soon after beginning to listen, I was surprised to learn that what I had was a shape shifter romance.
Setting out to save her family farm from her father’s gambling debts, Kristiana has a plan to ride the winning horse and take the purse and a bet on her own horse. And it would have worked if she hadn’t impulsively purchased a stallion which was being abused by one of her competitors, forcing her to take a loan from the man who dumped her years ago. You can imagine her surprise when she finds her newest purchase is not a horse , but a shape shifting Russian prince who had been cursed hundreds of years ago, and somehow, Kris has the key to his powers. The whole scenario leads to some humorous scenes, as the headstrong prince rears his jealous head, while Kris tries to sort out her feelings for her ex, and raise the money to save the farm.
The author has crafted a truly enjoyable story that makes you laugh in all the right places. And Ms. Gunderson does an excellent job of narrating. I give My Queendom for a Horse five quills.
About The Recipient

Sergeant Wade McKinnon knows who killed Samantha the moment he arrives at her crime scene. Problem is, he watched her killer die a year ago.
A year after serial killer Michael Rhodes is executed and allowed to donate part of his brain as an organ transplant, Wade gets called to a murder scene that shares uncanny similarities to those of the late Michael Rhodes. Other similar killings happen around Seattle, and Wade seems to be the only person still alive who knows enough about Michael Rhodes’s murders to be able to replicate them. When evidence found at one of the crime scenes points to Wade as the killer, he races to find the real culprit before it’s too late to clear his own name.
Elle is overjoyed when her husband, Brian, receives a partial brain transplant and gets a second chance at life. Until she learns that his brain cells came from a serial killer….

My Review of The Recipient
I purchased The Recipient, by Audrey J. Cole and read by Marcio Catalano and Veronica Pace, from a Chirp Freebie Friday deal. I’m offering an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
This story uses dual male and female narrators, which I’ve found works well in romances, but I was unsure how that would work for a thriller. In hindsight, although each of them missed inflections a few times, they really did a premium job. Catalano and Pace did a smash-up job, instead of just alternating chapters, they dubbed the female voice of Pace into the male POV chapters, and the male voice of Catalano into the female POV chapters, which is how the dual narrating should be done. I can see why this book was nominated for the Voice Arts Awards, as advertised on the cover.
As far as story goes, the title gives it all away, but it is also a little misleading. Early on I figured out who the killer was and although the author was skilled in laying it all out, I still felt the story to be predictable as events unfolded. Overall, though, it was a decent thriller with tension building in all the right places and well-developed characters.
I give The Recipient four quills.

My Review of Behind You
I purchased an audiobook copy of Behind You, by Rylie Dark and narrated by Susan Marlowe from a Chirp Friday Freebie Deal. I’m offering an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
The trail of a serial killer creating human scarecrows in her hometown brings FBI Agent Hailey Rock back to work the case alongside her small-town sheriff sister, stirring old memories and old grievances, as they follow the crime trail to discover who is responsible for these reprehensible crimes. Unable to work together, the sisters pursue their individual theories independently, and it becomes more of a race to see who can solve the crime first. But you can’t solve the puzzle until you have all the pieces, and some are still missing. We are given enough viewpoint from the killer’s perspective to be able to speculate if each of the suspects could be the perpetrator, but the identity isn’t revealed until the very end.
This mystery is well written, although the personal conflict between sisters is over played in this listener’s opinion, making both law enforcement officers seem unprofessional and petty. That said, the narrator, Susan Marlowe does an excellent job, providing distinctive voices that don’t all sound alike, but very natural, and carefully placing just the right emotional touches exactly where needed.
A well-crafted crime thriller mystery with an excellent narrator. I give Behind You four quills.
About A Shift in Shadows

I was a fool in love once—until I learned he only wanted me for my power. I left him and found love with someone else. He retaliated by ripping out her heart.

Damned by magic.
But to destroy the warlock who has haunted my dreams once and for all, I might have to embrace the dark magic I’ve been hiding my entire life. And even if I survive… it will change the course of my life forever.

My Review of A Shift in Shadows
I purchased an audiobook copy of A Shift in Shadows, written by Maddox Grey and narrated by Krys Janae, through a free Chirp deal. I’m offering here an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
I must commend this narrator. Every character has a distinctive voice which fits the character’s personality. Krys Janae does an excellent job of bringing these characters to life, whether they be shifter, vampire, witch or warlock, fae, demon, or…. something else. Janae may be the best narrator I have as yet encountered. Bravo on a job well done.
I had a hard time getting into this world. I am familiar with werewolves and vampires, but I haven’t read a lot of stories where they exist together and socialize. Add to that, witches and warlocks, demons, and members of the fae realm, all either loving or fighting amongst themselves, and new, unfamiliar beings called devourers, and that’s a lot to learn and assimilate. There are vampire hybrids, too; vampire kids, which goes against all that I know about vampires, which comes from classic vampire literature and Anne Rice. But once I accepted that this world was different from others which I had explored and accepted it for what it is, I began getting into the characters and the world, and I have to admit, I became invested.
Lemane knows who she is, but she is unsure what she is, and she is on a constant search for answers. But it’s hard to search when you are hiding from a crazy rogue warlock, who is determined to have her as his own or destroy her. All her life she was taught to keep her own magic hidden, and since she’s not encountered any other beings which have magic such as hers, the kind that can open gateways to other realms, she fears what will happen if she lets it out, but is forced to use it to save herself and those she cares for, time after time. With a vampire for a roommate, a werewolf for a lover, and a fae for a bestie, Lemane searches for answers in this realm and beyond. But there’s more going on than she realizes, and greater powers are at work, all in a grab for control of the realms.
Can Lemane find the answers she seeks and stop an evil coupe, avoid the warlocks and vampires, and stay alive long enough to save her world and herself?
I may not know what an FMC is, but I surely know a good story when I hear one. I give A Shift in Shadows five quills.

Detectives Daniels and Remalla came to Dumont for a quiet week off. They found a body on the riverbank instead – and a town that suspects they’re the killers.
The Black River has secrets. For years, locals whispered about the ghost of a murdered woman haunting its banks. Her killer was never found. Her case went cold.
Then they discover a second body on the riverbank behind Daniels’ cabin. Same spot. Same killer?
Suddenly, their peaceful vacation becomes a fight for survival. The small-town sheriff suspects them. The townspeople watch their every move. And someone in Dumont is willing to kill to keep the past buried.

My Review of Haunted River
I purchased a digital copy of Haunted River: A Murder Mystery Suspense Thriller, by J.T. Bishop through a free KindofBook deal. I’m offering an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
I chose this book because of the title. I mean, who wouldn’t be intrigued by a mystery involving a haunted river? It is book 1 in the Detectives Daniels and Remalla Murder Mystery Series. Obviously, the characters carry this series.
Gordon Daniels is a great dad and husband, in addition to being a first-rate detective. Aaron Remalla is a good-looking single guy, with a healthy fear of the paranormal. Together, they charm the local residents of the small town of Dumont, (or not), and battle the bad guys, once they dispel the myth of the woman in white that roams the river and identify who the bad guys really are. This tale has more twists and turns than a winding mountain road as Daniels and Remalla try to unravel what is truly happening in Dumont, where everyone is suspect, even the local sheriff.
When a dead body is found in the river on Daniels’ uncle’s property, our two big city detectives become suspects, and the race is on to prove who really murdered the girl before the local sheriff finds a way to pin it on them. The girl is found in a place and a manner that is uncannily similar to another death which occurred in the distant past and is also tied in with the local legend of a lady in white, reportedly seen by many of the local residents.
A top-rate paranormal murder mystery. I give Haunted River five quills.
About Of Body and Bone

A kidnapper strikes again, but his evil ties to a killer reveal a dangerous threat.
After a shocking investigation ends, Detectives Daniels and Remalla are back at work, but their routine is shattered when a child goes missing and they rush to find a young boy and the man who kidnapped him. But all is not what it seems when they discover the kidnapper’s connection with a previous case and a killer now behind bars.
When Daniels becomes a target and Remalla is plagued by the past, they must trust their instincts to find a killer and protect an innocent victim. But when Daniels’ family is threatened, Daniels must choose between following the law, or breaking it.
As the killer reveals his true nature, strange abilities, and mysterious hidden ties to an evil past, Daniels and Remalla are forced to confront their oaths as officers and moral compass in order to defeat a man capable of destroying… both body and bone.
Of Body and Bone is book three in the Detectives Daniels and Remalla Series. It closely follows and should be read after Of Breath and Blood.
If you love two bantering detectives, a gripping murder mystery thriller that will keep you up at night, a touch of supernatural suspense, and a riveting fast-paced read, then enjoy Of Body and Bone.

My Review of Of Body and Bone
I purchased a digital copy of Of Body and Bone, by J.T. Bishop through a free BookBub deal. I am offering an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
I chose this book because I just finished Book 1 in the Detectives Daniels and Remalla Murder Mystery Series and very much enjoyed it. So, when I found Book 3 in a free BookBub deal, I just couldn’t resist. The series is titled for the two detectives who are the main protagonists, the good guys who solve the crimes, but not before being put through the wringer by their adversaries, Gordon Daniels and Aaron Remalla.
I must say, these books are written in such a way that they work well as stand alones. Even though I skipped book 2, the author offers enough information about the interim between books. 1 and 3 to have a general idea of what happened in book 2 without actually reading it. As a reader, that’s a good thing, but I wonder if it is so good for the author.
In Of Body and Bone, Rem is still recovering from his experience with an evil cult in Book 2, and we learn that although the head of the cult is behind bars, looking at being locked away for a very long time. But her reach is far and they soon find that the kidnapper they are looking for in their current case has ties to the cult leader, Allison. It soon becomes apparent that this is no ordinary kidnapper and things just get weirder as they try and solve the case, and Allison’s lawyer tries to discredit them both. No spoilers here, but we are left with the feeling that this story may not be over yet, even as they wrap up the case.
Filled with surprises, this paranormal mystery does not disappoint. I give Of Body and Bone five quills.

Come Get Me is book 1 of a brand-new series by critically acclaimed and number one best-selling mystery and suspense author Molly Black, whose books have received over 2,000 five-star reviews and ratings.
The FBI is alarmed by the rash of killings on trains throughout the country, and they realize they have to put together a joint task force to tackle it. Through a partnership with the rail police, FBI Special Agent Cailtin Dare is chosen to spearhead the new unit designed to hunt killers using trains across the country.
But Cailtin remains haunted by memories of her missing sister, her unsolved case, her erratic conductor uncle, and a harrowing fear of trains.

A harrowing crime thriller featuring a brilliant and tortured FBI agent, the Caitlin Dare series is a riveting mystery, packed with nonstop action, suspense, twists and turns, revelations, and driven by a breakneck pace that will keep you listening late into the night. Fans of Rachel Caine, Teresa Driscoll and Robert Dugoni are sure to fall in love.
My Review of Come Get Me
I purchased an audiobook copy of Come Get Me, written by Molly Black and narrated by Rosanna Pilcher through a free Chirp deal. I am offering here an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
I’m not sure what it was about this book, but I had a hard time relating to the character, Caitlin Dare and the story. The story line is your average murder mystery, FBI crime thriller, but nothing unusual to make it stand out in any way. There were few places where I felt an impending sense of danger to keep me on the edge of my seat as any good thriller should. I was not particularly impressed by Pilcher’s narrative skills, as the narration sounded choppy, with missed beats often. I tried varying speeds, but it did not make it any better.
Caitlin Dare is an FBI agent that tends to go rogue and break the rules to achieve her final goal; a trope that is rather cliche and predictable. She is assigned to a new railroad crime unit and a new partner, where she is faced with having to prove herself to her superiors and to herself, by earning her partners trust and solving the latest string of murders, where victims are left posed in train cars, found only after the murderer has a chance to get away.
An average crime thriller, with a sub-par narration. I give Come Get Me three quills.

Book Review: “Flat Spin”
Posted: December 19, 2025 Filed under: Audio Books, Book Review, Crime, Fiction, Noir, Review | Tags: Audiobook, Book Review, Crime Fiction, David Freed, Flat Spin, Noir, Ray Porter, Writing to be Read 1 CommentAbout Flat Spin
Flat Spin is the first installment in David Freed’s acclaimed thriller series featuring Cordell Logan, a sardonic pilot with dwindling savings and a shadowy past.

Flying out of California’s sunny Rancho Bonita, Cordell Logan is a flight instructor and aspiring Buddhist whose attempt at a quiet(er) life is shattered when his ex-wife Savannah arrives on his doorstep. Her new husband—and Logan’s former comrade-in-arms—Arlo Echevarria, has been murdered and she needs his help.
Logan and Echevarria used to be members of a top-secret military assassination team known as Alpha. Savannah begs him to tell the police what he knows in order to help them solve the murder, but sharing that sort of information raises both ethical and practical concerns. After an attempt on Logan’s own life it becomes clear that this goes deeper than he thought, and that solving the murder himself may be the only way to ensure his—and Savannah’s—safety.
Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Freed brings his own experience to bare in this brilliant binge-worthy mystery perfect for fans of Robert B. Parker and Robert Rotstein.

My Review of Flat Spin
I purchased an audiobook of Flat Spin, by David Freed and narrated by Ray Porter, through a Chirp $1 Deal. All opinions stated here are my own.
Before I begin, I have to give kudos to the narrator, Ray Porter. This guy has such a wide range of character voices that it is absolutely amazing. As he reads the story, each character is given a distinctive voice, which really helps to put the listener into the story. He does both male and female voices, Asian voices, Russian voices and African American voices, all with apparent ease, and the listener is able to distinguish between characters and know who is speaking. Superb!
Cordell Logan is a retired special operative and flight instructor turned amateur detective to find a killer when his ex-wife asks to find her current husband’s killer. The story tone is one that reminded me of tales of hard-core detective protagonist, such as Mickey Spillane, or Mike Hammer. (Know what I mean, kid?) The tone is purposeful and is emphasized by the audiobook’s narrator, Ray Porter. And the amount of bad luck and misfortune which falls in the protagonist’s way is reminiscent of James Rockford of The Rockford Files.
Although, a fairly run of the mill hard crime fiction detective novel, the talent of the chosen narrator makes this story shine above the crowd in my book. I give Flat Spin five quills.

Book Review: “Final Notice”
Posted: December 12, 2025 Filed under: Action/Adventure, Book Review, Books, cozy mystery, Crime, Fiction, Humor, Mystery, Review, Thriller | Tags: Book Reveiw, Crime Fiction, Final Notice, Humor, Jennifer Hart, mystery, Writing to be Read Leave a commentAbout Final Notice

Fester Gomez is three months behind on his rent for his pricey South Beach condo and Damaged Goods is on the job. Either they convince the tenant to pay up or he’ll face eviction. The simple task turns deadly when the team discovers Gomez missing and a Jane Doe slowly decomposing in his bathtub. Serving a killer up to justice, wrestling family secrets—it’s just another day on the job for Damaged Goods.
My Review of Final Notice
I purchased Final Notice, by Jennifer L. Hart from a KindofBook deal and I am providing an honest review. All opinions stated here are my own.
Final Notice, by Jennifer L. Hart is Book 1 in the Damaged Goods Mystery series. Damaged Goods is the name Jackie Parker chooses for their property management business when her husband, Luke, and brother-in-law, Logan, invite her to join their team as a certified process server. As one might guess from the business name, this tale contains quite a bit of humor, as Jackie is determined to find out who the dead girl in the bathtub at their first gig is, and find their missing tenant, and our trio finds themselves in some very unexpected situations. Jackie goes through outfits like someone with halitosis goes through breath mints, as she pokes her nose where someone doesn’t think it belongs.
Throw into the mix, a close encounter with Logan before she met Luke, which Luke doesn’t know about, that keeps things plenty uncomfortable among our new business partners, a mother-in-law who renews her vows every year with Jackie in the wedding party, a very needy mother of her own, and an unquenchable need to solve a mystery, and you’ve got the makings for a thoroughly entertaining cozy that won’t let you down.
I recommend Ms. Hart expend more on editing, as there were enough typos to be distracting from the story, but I had so much fun following along as Jackie tries to evict some very unusual tenants, and interact with the story’s other quirky characters, that I was willing to struggle past them and continue reading.
Comical and witty, as well as adventurous. If you can ignore the many typos, you’ll be well entertained by this cozy mystery. I give Final Notice four quills.

My Review of Rage in the Wilderness
I purchased Rage in the Wilderness, by Katheryn Lane through a Friday BookBub Deal. All opinions stated here are my own.
A vacation to New Mexico turns sour when wildfires force evacuation and P.I., Nicki Garcia’s husband is abducted in the chaos. She’s torn between getting her brother’s family to safety, and locating her husband, Eduardo. As on a true life investigation, the right hand doesn’t always know what the left is doing, especially when the feds get involved.
Lots of action and gun play, foiled escapes, and tense moments. Readers don’t know any more than our two protagonists do and must wait as the mystery unfolds. I give Rage in the Wilderness four quills.

This fun-filled and clean librarian cozy mystery will have you guessing until the very end.

My Review of Digging Up Murder
I purchased a digital copy of Digging Up Murder, by Penny Brooke through a KindofBook Deal. All opinions stated here are my own.
Digging up Murder, by Penny Brooke is a delightful cozy murder mystery, complete with a cuddly kitten and a dog named Lucky. (While the kitten is cute and may win readers hearts with the classic ‘Save the Cat’s move, it doesn’t actually have a part in the solving of the mystery, so its presence felt a little gimmicky.)
Elly has returned to her hometown of Garden Cove after the breakup of a really bad relationship, in time for her grandmother’s retirement from the local library. While doing a fall cleanup in her grandmother’s yard, Elly discovers a human hand buried in the detritus, and before she knows what’s happening, her elderly grandmother has been arrested for murder! Although the idea is preposterous, it looks like it is up to Elly to discover the true murderer and get her grandma out of jail. But it’s time for the annual witches’ festival and there are special events scheduled at the library, as well. With grandma in the pokey, it falls to her to be sure it all comes off without a hitch, all while searching for the answers to this murder mystery with the help of her once best friend, Claire and her high school boyfriend, Nathan, and his trustworthy dog, Lucky.
I think cozies are meant to be feel-good mysteries, softening murder down to a basic puzzle to be solved with lots of cute distractions. By those standards, this story does exactly what it was meant to do and serves its purpose well. I did enjoy watching the mystery unfold, and the kitten and the dog were quite entertaining. (But then who can resist a cute little kitten and a loveable dog?) The story was well crafted, which I think I mystery must be, for all the clues and red herrings to work like they are supposed to.
A well-crafted cozy which gives you all the clues, so that the answer is right in front of the reader, but they don’t realize it until the answers are revealed. I give Digging Up Murder five quills.

My Review of Stalks
I purchased a digital copy of Stalks, by Jenna Moquin through a KindofBook deal. All opinions stated here are my own.
Stalks, by Jenna Moquin is a very unusual dark fiction thriller. The title made me think of ‘stalkers’ and seemed appropriate for a thriller, and I won’t tell the true meaning and spoil the surprise, but I would have never guessed. The unusual characters make this book one to please mystery and thriller lovers alike, especially if you like your dark fiction a little on the odd side.
At first, I believed this was going to be your run of the mill thriller as our happy couple gets lost in the spooky woods and believes they are being stalked by someone or something. When their car is stolen and they are rescued by a pair of odd ducks, I thought I knew where things were headed. But that’s where the story started to take some unusual twists, and like any good thriller, it kept me on the edge of my seat wondering how either of them will come out alive. There are no spoilers here. If you want to know more, you’ll have to read it yourself, but I’d give it a go if you’re into the odd and quirky.
A journey into the unusual that is full of surprises. I give Stalks four quills.

My Review of Don’t Let Her Go
I purchased Don’t Let Her Go, by Willow Rose through a Friday BookBub Deal. All opinions stated here are my own.
Don’t Let Her Go is a mystery crime thriller about a missing child who may not actually exist, and it’s up to Detective Billie Ann Wilde to find her and discover why there is no record of this child. With a young mother who seemed to want help finding her daughter at first, but then disappears without a trace, the task won’t be easy. She pushes hard to track down the suspected abductor, but she may be shocked by where the trail leads her.
Skillfully crafted to keep readers guessing. Like a puzzle, the real story builds up one piece at a time and one cannot see the whole picture until the last piece is in place, or in this case, until the last page is turned. Willow Rose doesn’t ever give too much away, but just enough to add to the mystery and keep the pages turning.
A true mystery with many twists and turns and a surprise ending. I give Don’t Let Her Go five quills.
