The Dark Horse Waits in Boulder
Recently divorced Charli Erickson arrives in Boulder, Colorado during the 1970s—a wild time for that city—where she hopes to develop her “rock poet” talent and find the perfect mate. Instead, she links up with the imperfect Ched Lyons, a Boulder native who leads her in a multitude of adventures, including scaling a mountain and a 1,200-mile motorcycle ride to southeastern Utah. While she intermittently envisions a black stallion with blue eyes, who puzzles and enchants her, she also strives to make sense of its appearance.
Through Charli’s snarky humor recounting her tales, readers will enjoy this Rom-Com doubling as a woman’s adventure story and may relate to scenes from the wild, zany era that followed the serious, revolutionary 1960s.

When I think of a romance, this was not what I normally think of. Ched and Charli had a very dysfunctional relationship, despite loving one another. It was on again, off again, but they kept getting back together. They were like magnets to one another. When Adam comes to live with Charli, he and Ched become close. Any other person Charli gets close to doesn’t pass the Adam test. Adam has issues as well, and Charli is always at her wits end as babysitters quit and she has to rely on some very questionable characters. Charli wants to become a published poet and throughout the book there are poems that she writes. I also like that each chapter began with the lyrics of a song. Music is a huge and important part of Charli’s life. Throughout the book she adds lines to her poem about The Dark Horse she sees in Boulder. Although I don’t think it was real, just a figment of her imagination, it came to her when she needed it. Will Charli tell Ched to move on and stay out of her life, or will they finally realize that they love each other too much and need to find a way to make it work? I wasn’t sure which ending I would rather have preferred in this book, but you will have to read it to find out what finally happens between Charli and Ched.

On Halloween 2023, redbat books released Lindsey Martin-Bowen’s 7th poetry collection, CASHING CHECKS with Jim Morrison.
